From the Chair

February 2024

The local short course season is winding down, but there are still a couple of meets on the horizon. McFarland is hosting a meet on Saturday, March 9. There's still time to register, but the deadline is Friday, March 8. at 6:00 pm. Here's the link to register, https://www.clubassistant.com/club/meet_information.cfm?c=2381&smid=17766. The Wisconsin Masters State Meet will be Saturday, March 23. The meet information is not posted yet, but continue to watch for the registration link on our website, wisconsinmastersswimming.com, under Events > Swim Meets.  There will be a pause after that until the Elmbrook Fun Meet, tentatively scheduled for June 8.

USMS SCY Nationals is open for registration, and early registration is through March 5. After that the swimmer surcharge increases. Here's the link for the meet information, https://www.usms.org/events/national-championships/pool-national-championships/2024-pool-national-championships/2024-spring-national-championship. So far, 17 Wisconsin swimmers are registered, although a number of swimmers have been talking about going, so I'm sure a larger group will be present.

The Wisconsin Open Water Swim at Fox Brook Park in Waukesha County on June 15, is also open for registration. This year will feature the 1000 and 1500 m events, in both wetsuit and non-wetsuit categories. The registration link is https://www.clubassistant.com/club/meet_information.cfm?c=2649&smid=18229. The event is limited to the first 110 entrants.

The Wisconsin LCM State meet is also June 15, but it is possible to swim both events, since the Schroeder Aquatic Center is about a 40 minute drive from Fox Brook.

There have been a few swimmers recently who have been wondering about the difference between WMSC and WISC. There will be a more detailed description in the next newsletter, but I'll give a brief explanation here. WMSC is Wisconsin Masters Swim Committee, and we are under the auspices of USMS, and are to carry out their mission to promote adult swimming.

We have our own board, which is listed in the newsletter. WISC is the Regional Club, which encompasses the entire state. It is the competitive club we swim for at nationals. WISC is Wisconsin Masters Aquatic Club, and they have their own incorporation and board of officers. We cannot mix business or funds between the two entities, per USMS rules. While WMSC carries out the mission to promote swimming under USMS, WISC is the competitive club, organizing a team for the USMS national meets, as well as putting together our local competitive swim meets.

Thanks for supporting our local meet hosts, having fun with relays, and swimming in fun events! Let's close out our short course season with a good showing at our State Meet on March 23, in a very fast pool. Let's see if we can achieve our end-of-season goals, and even if we don't there's always next year, and we'll have FUN in the process!

Swimmingly,
